Tromsø Idrettslag is a Norwegian professional football team founded in 1920, and based in the city of Tromsø. They play their home games at Alfheim Stadion. Tromsø currently play in the Norwegian Premier League, and holds the position as the northernmost top-level football club in the world. The club was first promoted to the Norwegian Premier League in 1985, where they have played since with the exception of the 2001-season which were spent in the First Division.
Tromsø won the Norwegian Cup for the first time in 1986, and claimed the second title in 1996, when they beat regional rivals Bodø/Glimt 2–1. Tromsø met Chelsea in the 1997–98 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, and won 3–2 at home in the first leg, before losing 7–1 at Stamford Bridge. Tromsø qualified for the group stage of the UEFA Cup in 2005–06.
